Dolphin Turangawaewae Writing

Time is slipping away to see some of New Zealand’s dolphins, is there a link between their size and their population can we save them before it’s too late? Dolphins are amazing and they are some of the smartest mammals that currently walk or swim the earth. There have been many stories of dolphins helping humans, such as Pelorus Jack who guided sailors through the treacherous straits off the coast of Tasmania. There is also another myth of a dolphin named Flipper who continuously rescued 2 accident-prone little boys. However dolphins are very vulnerable around sharks because there is no secret that they are mortal enemies. The reason why dolphins are so smart is because of their echolocation which is a system similar to radar and they send out waves to see how they bounce off things.

Bottlenose Dolphins
Bottlenose dolphins are approximately 150-454 kilograms in weight. They measure at 2-4m in length when they are adults but are born at just 85cm. The Bottlenose dolphin is found around the coast on both New Zealand Islands. They are neither endangered or rare because there are 79,830 all over the world and 600 of them currently inhabit New Zealand waters. They are commonly found swimming alongside the bow of a boat and they can reach a speed of  35km per hour. They have a relatively long lifespan of 40 years. Their diet consists of many forage fish. The scientific name for Bottlenose dolphin is Tursiops.

Hector’s Dolphin
Hector’s dolphins weigh 40-60kg as an adult. They are one of the smallest dolphins with a length of just 1.2-1.6 metres. The Hector’s dolphin is very endangered and rare because there are less than 8,000 in the world. A Hector’s dolphin lifespan is only half of a Bottlenose dolphin's life with 20 years! The diet of a Hector’s dolphin consists mostly of Yellow-eyed mullet, Squid, Flatfish and Red cod. The scientific name for Hector’s dolphin is Cephalorhynchus hectori. The shape of a Hector’s dolphin's dorsal fin is extremely odd as it looks similar to a Mickey Mouse ear.

Maui Dolphins
Maui dolphins are very light and females weigh 50kg maximum and the males are even lighter. They are quite short aswell only measuring a maximum of 1.7m but are born at just 50-60cm long. The maui dolphin is the most critically endangered species of dolphin with only 43-47 of them left. They have the same lifespan of a Hector’s dolphin with only 20 years of possible life.Maui dolphins feed on small fish squid, and ocean floor-dwelling species such as flatfish and cod. The scientific name for Maui’s dolphin is Cephalorhynchus hectori maui. Maui dolphins communicate in high frequency clicks rather than whistles like other dolphins. They can be found of the upper west coast of the North Island in water 20m deep or even more shallow. They generally swim in groups of 3-4.

The Short Beaked Common Dolphin
The Short-Beaked common dolphin can weigh up to 200 kilograms and can grow to 2.74 metres long. They are very common with an estimated population of 3 million. The Short-beaked common dolphin has a relatively short life span with only 22 years of possible life. The food they consume is made up of squid and small fish (generally in large schools). The scientific name for a Short Beaked Common Dolphin is Delphinus Delphis.

The exact population of Orcas is unknown we do know that there are at least 50,000 in the world. The female Orca can live for up to 29 years but a male Orca will only live for 17 years.  The diet of an Orca consists of seabirds, squid, octopuses, sea turtles, sharks, manta rays and fish. The Ruby Cloak (My Beyond The Backyard Competition Entry)

The backyard, the old messy backyard, the backyard that never brought joy to anyone (or at least not to me), the backyard that will never be destroyed.

I, a supposedly normal girl is bewildered at how I came to be in this position of deciding if I should be queen of Allyssandria. Now this is going to take a while so listen carefully.

It all started in the backyard, as clearly stated above, on a wintery day in the middle of summer. When to my dismay I was sent outside. I was playing like an innocent little girl  which of course I was. When suddenly something exciting happened the floor fell away under my feet. I didn’t scream or try to grab anything, why you ask, I couldn’t, I was never going to miss my family, not now anyway, that and I was paralysed due to the shock of everything.

Eventually, I landed in some place (I don’t actually know where), where only women were at war and a small child was dodging ricocheting shrapnel all the whilst he was running. He rushed up to me and told me to follow him. After an in depth conversation I was convinced it must be somewhere safer. So I agreed, I don’t know why, but I did.

After what seemed like an hour of walking through perilous battlefields we arrive at some sugar palace where I was given a ruby cloak. I assumed it was a Allyssandria custom that when a woman arrived at the sugar palace that they were given a ruby cloak. As soon as I stepped inside, the butler's, slaves and workers moved at the drop of a hat into 2 neat lines at either side of the main hall. I was greeted like a queen and moved to my quarters.

I slowly walked around the room contemplating how I got here and barely noticed the 4 poster bed, a glittering gold lamp, a desk that seemed to be organised by a perfectionist and a huge stained glass window that was in the shape a million dollar crystal. Why was it so different to home, and then it finally clicked I was no longer on earth, but in a parallel universe. 3 hours later (I think) a butler named Michael came up to my room and asked me  to be at the throne room for my coronation in 30 minutes. I did not hear the part about the coronation but assumed very incorrectly that it was dinnertime.

I happened to arrive a little late and the minister seemed to be waiting a bit impatiently by the look of it. I was perplexed when the minister welcomes everyone to my coronation but I guess it was just a mistake in his speech but carried on listening. The final “mistake” in speech was when I was called up to the main stage to receive my crown and become queen. It was then that I realised it was not a mistake and they wanted me to be their ruler!

I thought of running away, I thought of saying no kindly, I thought they might have millions of other options for this position. But I also thought of the things I could change and fix, the lives I could save from the war and I thought of the escape from my family. I somehow feel that this ruby cloak was what they gave me as a coronation gift.

Now that is the story of how I came to be in this position. However there is still a bit more to tell.

Eventually after this psychological war in my head, I come to the conclusion of accepting my position of queen of Allyssandria. However, for some strange reason not everyone seemed happy about my new position as queen. My first act was a huge buffet for everyone in this strange parallel universe. My second act was to declare fighting and war illegal with the punishment of death.

At the 3 year coronation anniversary there was an earth themed party, as I started to feel a little homesick.

At the 5 year coronation anniversary I had a fair ground built with the same things as earth fair grounds.

After nearly 7 years of ruling Allyssandria it became much too hard to handle the enormous part of me that seemed broken. I decided to return to earth, to my family. There was only one problem I didn’t know how to get home. . .

Poem

Ally is a rocket, travelling further each day seeking knowledge that is yet to be discovered.

Ally is a skyscraper, towering above people.

Ally is a bag of Birdwoods lollies, waiting to be devoured.

Ally is a Top Hat, old-fashioned and creative.

My Memoir

Best Holiday Yet. Not Quite.

I will never forget the 10th of March 2016. I won't forget the extremely worried lady who nearly called the ambulance. I will remember forever the shooting pain and the horrifying noise. Amethyst is now permanently embedded in my mind as both birthstone and doomstone. Unfortunately on my mothers side of the family they have very low blood pressure and faint easily. Suffice to say this happened to kick in on this particular day. Who knew what tiny purple spots could do to you. I had gotten my ears pierced.
